What is ISO 22000?
All food producers have a responsibility towards the well-being of their consumers and managing safety of their products. Nowadays people are generally better informed about their food choices related food safety concerns.
Food safety has become more important issue than ever due to the ever-increasing reach and complexity of the food supply chain. To address this, ISO has developed ISO 22000 standard for the certification of food safety management systems. The standard is intended to provide security by ensuring that there are no weak links in the food supply chain, and to achieve international harmonization in the field of food safety standards. ISO 22000 food safety management system (FSMS) defines the requirements of a food safety covering all organizations in the food chain from “farm to fork”.
ISO 22000 contains the food safety management system requirements of FSSC 22000 (which is a Global Food Safety Initiative, GFSI recognized scheme) and is used along with requirements for prerequisite programs for the appropriate industry sector.
An updated FAQ communication from the IAF has stated that due to the current COVID-19 situation and in line with the extension of other transitions and migrations, the deadline for transitioning from ISO 22000:2005 to ISO 22000:2018 has now been extended till 31st December 2021.
