What is ISO 45001?
ISO 45001 is an international standard for occupational health and safety. Every day around 6,300 employees lose their lives across the globe due to work-related illnesses or accidents. This accounts for more than 2.5 million lives per year. This has direct and indirect costs on both the economy of the country and the employers. While direct cost includes hospitalization cost, compensation, and legal transactions etc., indirect costs like Labor hours lost, machine downtimes, loss of production, employees motivation and company’s image are far more damaging.
ISO published ISO 45001:2018, the international standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S) by revising OHSAS 18001 standard. Up until March 2018, OHSAS 18001 was the internationally recognized voluntary standard for OH&S, however, with the publication of ISO 45001, the official status of OHSAS 18001:2007 is “withdrawn”. Note that the transition period for migrating accredited certifications from OHSAS 18001:2007 to ISO 45001:2018 is extended to 30 September 2021.
Since ISO 45001 is prepared on Annex SL framework, it shares the same high-level text and common structure with other managements system standards like ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, thus making the integration much easier.
